A key priority for the Project is to bring void and derelict properties back into sustainable use. In 2005 the Project succeeded in securing a lease for a key property in the heart of the historic core area of Bilston Town. The Project undertook and successfully completed a major refurbishment of the internal of the building.
We were keen to introduce an initiative with a strong focus on assisting local young people. Evidence showed that volunteering amongst young people in Bilston was relatively low and a scheme that encouraged volunteering would be seen as a positive asset for the town.
The Project forged a strong partnership with The City of Wolverhampton College and the Prince’s Trust to introduce a base in Bilston for the Prince’s Trust Team Programme.
Due to the size and location of the property there is capacity to run “Super Teams” made up of 15-30 clients. Prince’s Trust Team 48 was the first team to run from the new Bilston venue and has received widespread support and success.
Sharon Beech, Co-ordinator for Prince's Trust Programmes at the City of Wolverhampton College says:
“The City of Wolverhampton College, as Delivery Partner for the Prince's Trust Team Programme in the Black Country, is extremely grateful for the support of partners such as the Bilston Development Project, whose involvement has greatly enhanced the quality of the provision in the City. The Project has funded the development of premises at Caledonia Street in Bilston, which have been refurbished to a very high standard, and provide a first class location from which to deliver Teams. Placed right at the heart of the community, it provides a focal point for carrying out community projects and work placements, thereby supporting local people and businesses. It also offers young people in the area an opportunity to focus on improving their skills and life chances.”
